With two states reporting in, the confused, bland, and uninspiring Democratic primaries are finally taking shape. All signs point to Bernie Sanders taking a commanding lead, perhaps even clinching the nomination. But a new poll from Gallup was recently released. It gauges what kind of candidates the American people are willing to elect. Sanders should be getting pretty upset right now.
It’s no secret that the Democratic establishment do not want Bernie Sanders nominated. In the weeks leading up to the Iowa caucuses, there was an obvious effort by the media to crush him. Remember the seemingly invented scandal between Sanders and Elizabeth Warren? CNN was behind that scheme, in which they tried to stain him as a sexist.
Other notable Democrats came out swinging against the Democratic socialist. It seems that as Joe Biden’s chances got slimmer and slimmer, the establishment on the left got more and more worried that Sanders could take it all away.
Even Barack Obama expressed concern if Sanders was elected. An infamous meeting in New York late last year brought key donors together, discussing if they could convince someone, anyone, to run. That meeting of the “minds” is want probably prompted Mike Bloomberg to start spending away his fortune on campaign ads.
Yet even with all his money, the momentum is in Sanders’ favor.
Democrats have very good reason to worry. Sure, Sanders’ rabid supporters love him—most of them are pot-smoking anarchists. But it doesn’t seem like the general population is interested in electing a self-described socialist to the highest office in the land.
And now, we have a Gallup poll to prove it.
According to a Gallup survey released yesterday, “[m]ore than 90% of Americans say they would be happy to vote for a presidential candidate their party nominated who would be black, Catholic, Hispanic, Jewish or a woman; 80% would accept evangelical Christians, homosexual men, and lesbians; 60-70% are willing to embrace a presidential candidate who is under 40, over 70, a Muslim or an atheist; but only 45% say they would vote for a socialist for president,”
As Gallup noted at the top of its report, socialists are the “one group tested” who “receive majority opposition.” After all, “[l]ess than half of Americans, 45%, say they would vote for a socialist for president, while 53% say they would not.” [Source: Daily Wire]
Ouch. Only 45% of those asked said they were willing to vote for a socialist. In fact, it seems Americans are more than willing to elect a black, Catholic, gay, or lesbian president. But not a socialist! No sir!
That’s got to be humbling, right? Most Americans say they’d elect a gay person (from within their own party) over a person who embraces Karl Marx’s economy system.
I can’t blame ‘em. Bernie Sanders says there shouldn’t be billionaires. Yet he wants to tax billionaires to pay for his free health care and college tuition. Sanders wants to enact heavy environmental regulation that would damage major industries. Plus, he wants open borders so that illegal immigrants can take whatever jobs are left.
Bring on the gays! If it means we can keep taxes low, protect our borders, and preserve America’s capitalist heritage.
This is why Obama has even threatened to “get involved” if Sanders started getting a lead. Even the socialist-leaning former president knows most Americans won’t get on board for Uncle Bernie’s crazy ideas.
Perhaps that’s why so many are predicted a contested convention. The party is hoping Bloomberg can steal enough votes so that, going into the summer, there won’t be a clear nominee. Then, perhaps the powers that run the party can do a little bit of voodoo and ensure Sanders doesn’t get the nomination.
An underhanded strategy, but it’s the only option they have left. It’s either that, or give the party over to a radical socialist that is endorsed by Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez.
