President Trump’s new appointment to fill a senior role at the Office of the Director of National Intelligence is already causing some controversy.

As Axios reports, the president’s critics have expressed disapproval over the selection, despite it not yet being officially announced.

From the report:

President Trump is seriously considering installing billionaire investor Steve Feinberg in a senior role at the Office of the Director of National Intelligence, according to four sources familiar with the planning.

Why it matters: Feinberg would enter the ODNI at an especially fraught time — during a pandemic, an election year, and during a period where Trump has a deeply frayed relationship with his intelligence community.

The White House has discussed installing Feinberg in a staff role that doesn’t require Senate confirmation, according to sources familiar with the discussions.

Feinberg currently chairs the President’s Intelligence Advisory Board and has been a “staunch ally,” according to the report.

Jared Kushner, National Security Adviser Robert O’Brien, and White House Counsel Pat Cipollone have all been in discussions with the president on who he should select for the senior position.

Despite the rumored decision, however, it is not yet clear if Feinberg would then keep his post once Texas Congressman John Ratcliffe is confirmed by the U.S. Senate to be his next director of national intelligence.

Trump previously appointed U.S. Ambassador Richard Grenell to be the Acting Director of the United States National Intelligence and appointed Ratcliffe to be the DNI. The president said he would then allow Ratcliffe to determine his own staffing decisions, Axios reports.

The new hiring comes just days after Trump told lawmakers his intentions to fire Michael Atkinson, the intelligence community’s inspector general.
