White House Coronavirus Taskforce Coordinator Dr. Deborah Birx told CNN on Sunday that the COVID-19 pandemic in the U.S. has hit a new phase as it is more widespread now, and that it is essentially hitting every place in the country.

“So, are we in a new phase of the pandemic?” CNN’s Dana Bash asked Birx. “And if so, what are you going to do to change course?”

“I think those are two very critical questions because we are in a new phase,” Birx responded. “And that’s why I really wanted to make it clear to the American people.”

Birx said that responses “have to be dramatically tailored” to the specific areas where the outbreaks are occurring, and that mitigation procedures are having an impact at the state and local levels.

“But I want to be very clear. What we’re seeing today is different from March and April. It is extraordinarily widespread. It’s into the rural as equal urban areas,” Birx said. “And to everybody who lives in a rural area, you are not immune or protected from this virus. And that’s why we keep saying, no matter where you live in America, you need to wear a mask and socially distance, do the personal hygiene pieces.”

“But, more importantly, if you’re in multigenerational households, and there’s an outbreak in your rural area or in your city, you need to really consider wearing a mask at home, assuming that you’re positive, if you have individuals in your households with comorbidities,” Birx concluded. “This epidemic right now is different, and it’s wide – it’s more widespread. And it’s both rural and urban.”

PARTIAL TRANSCRIPT PROVIDED VIA CNN:

BASH: But it’s clearly not working. I mean, we’ve been talking about outbreaks across the Sunbelt. You’re warning now about a resurgence in states across the Midwest. In recent days, you have named 20 – we’re putting them on the screen – 20 of the 50 states as places you’re watching.

So, are we in a new phase of the pandemic? And, if so, what are you going to do to change course?

BIRX: I think those are two very critical questions, because we are in a new phase. And that’s why I really wanted to make it clear to the American people.

It’s why we started putting out governor reports directly to the health officials and the governors in every single state, because we could see that each thing had to be tailored. So, each state has a tailored set of recommendations based on what we are seeing at the community level, what we are seeing relevant to the hospitals.

And each of these responses have to be dramatically tailored. We are beginning to see an impact from the mitigation procedures that many of the state and local officials have put into place.

But I want to be very clear. What we’re seeing today is different from March and April. It is extraordinarily widespread. It’s into the rural as equal urban areas.

And to everybody who lives in a rural area, you are not immune or protected from this virus. And that’s why we keep saying, no matter where you live in America, you need to wear a mask and socially distance, do the personal hygiene pieces.

On his Fox News show Wednesday, host Tucker Carlson contrasted CNN host Don Lemon’s recent political comments about the black community with comments he made in 2013.

In the segment, Carlson highlighted comments from this week in which Lemon suggested that “black lives matter” does not mean “all black lives matter,” stating that the movement is not “all-encompassing” and specifically does not focus on black-on-black violence, as well as comments in which he mocked reports about the rising crime rates in major U.S. cities. Carlson then played comments from Lemon in 2013 addressing issues in the black community.

“Now if you’re running a channel like CNN, you want dumb people on TV because they are compliant, they will say what they’re told, they will tell the audience what the moment demands, they will never stray from the script, and that’s exactly what Mr. Lemon is doing,” Carlson said. “But just seven years ago, it was a different country and people were kind of allowed to say what they thought was true. And so at the time, here’s what Don Lemon was saying about black communities.”

In the 2013 CNN clip, Lemon said:

More than 72 percent of children in the African-American community are born out of wedlock, that means absent fathers. And the studies show that a lack of a male role model is an express train right to prison, and the cycle continues. So please, black folks, as I said, if this doesn’t apply to you, I’m not talking to you. Pay attention to and think about what has been presented in recent history as acceptable behavior.

Pay close attention to the hip-hop and rap culture that many of you embrace, a culture that glorifies everything I just mentioned. Thug and reprehensible behavior, a culture that is making a lot of people rich, just not you and it’s not going to.

“Wow,” Carlson said after playing the clip. “Can you imagine what would happen if Don Lemon or his bodybuilding buddy [Chris Cuomo] over there or any of these hair-hats said something like that on CNN tonight or MSNBC? That would be their last live broadcast ever. They would be fired immediately. You can’t express views like that, and so they don’t. It tells you a lot.”

A longer clip of the 2013 CNN segment featuring Lemon floated around on social media earlier in the day and showed some of the other comments that Lemon made. Lemon said:

CNN’S DON LEMON: It’s time now for some tough love on the subject.

[BEGIN VIDEO CLIP]

BILL O’REILLY, FOX NEWS HOST: The reason there is so much violence and chaos in the black precincts is the disintegration of the African-American family.

[END VIDEO CLIP]

LEMON: He’s got a point. In fact, he’s got more than a point. Bill?

[BEGIN VIDEO CLIP]

O’REILLY: Raised without much structure, young black men often reject education and gravitate towards the street culture, drugs, hustling, gangs. Nobody forces them to do that, again, it is a personal decision.

[END VIDEO CLIP]

LEMON: He is right about that, too. But in my estimation, he doesn’t go far enough. Because black people, if you really want to fix the problem, here’s just five things that you should think about doing.

Here’s number five. Pull up your pants.

Number four now is the n-word.

Now number three. Respect where you live. Start small by not dropping trash, littering in your own communities. I’ve lived in several predominantly white neighborhoods in my life, I rarely, if ever, witnessed people littering. I live in Harlem now, it’s an historically black neighborhood, every single day I see adults and children dropping their trash on the ground when a garbage can is just feet away. Just being honest here.

Number two, finish school. You want to break the cycle of poverty? Stop telling kids they’re acting white because they go to school or they speak proper English. Over the course of a career, a college grad will make nearly $1 million more than a high school graduate. That’s a lot of money.

And number one, and probably the most important, just because you can have a baby, it doesn’t mean you should. Especially without planning for one or getting married first. More than 72 percent of children in the African-American community are born out of wedlock. That means absent fathers. And the studies show that lack of a male role model is an express train right to prison and the cycle continues.

Carlson’s segment has been widely circulated online. Among others, popular political commentator Dave Rubin tweeted out the video clip and declared that it was “an absolutely staggering take down.”

Sen. Tammy Duckworth (D-IL), a potential running mate for presumptive Democratic presidential nominee Joe Biden, signaled on Sunday that she was open to tearing down statues of some of America’s founding fathers.

“Senator, I know that you support change in the name of military bases named after Confederate leaders,” CNN’s Dana Bash said. “But there are leaders like George Washington and Thomas Jefferson who were slave owners, and some people are demanding that their monuments come down, too. So, in your view, where does it end? Should statues, for example, of George Washington come down?”

“Well, let me just say that we should start off by having a national dialogue on it at some point,” Duckworth responded.

Duckworth continued by attacking President Donald Trump, saying that Trump has “spent all his time talking about dead traitors.”

“So, that might be true, but George Washington, I don’t think anybody would call him a traitor,” Bash responded. “And there are moves by some to remove statues of him. Is that a good idea?”

“I think we should listen to everybody,” Duckworth responded. “I think we should listen to the argument there.”

TRANSCRIPT PROVIDED VIA CNN:

CNN HOST DANA BASH: Tammy Duckworth is blocking more than 1,000 military promotions to try to protect impeachment witness Lieutenant Colonel Alexander Vindman, and that as the senator is picking up buzz as a potential running mate for Vice President Joe Biden.

One column this week calling her — quote — “the anti-Trump, the anti-ugliness he revels in and the cynicism he stokes.”

So, joining me now is Illinois Senator Tammy Duckworth, a former Army lieutenant colonel who served as a helicopter pilot in Iraq.

Senator, thank you so much for joining me.

President Trump gave a speech at Mount Rushmore Friday night. He talked about the importance of preserving historical monuments. Take a listen.

(BEGIN VIDEO CLIP)

PRESIDENT DONALD TRUMP: Our nation is witnessing a merciless campaign to wipe out our history, defame our heroes, erase our values, and indoctrinate our children.

(END VIDEO CLIP)

BASH: Senator, I know that you support change in the name of military bases named after Confederate leaders.

But there are leaders like George Washington and Thomas Jefferson who were slave owners, and some people are demanding that their monuments come down, too. So, in your view, where does it end? Should statues, for example, of George Washington come down?

SEN. TAMMY DUCKWORTH (D-IL): Well, let me just say that we should start off by having a national dialogue on it at some point.

But, right now, we’re in the middle of a global pandemic. And our — one of our ally — one of our — countries that are opposed to us, Russia, has put a bounty on American troops’ head.

What really struck me about this speech that the president gave at Mount Rushmore was that he spent more time worried about honoring dead Confederates than he did talking about the lives of our American — 130,000 Americans who lost their lives to COVID-19, or by warning Russia off of the bounty they’re putting on Americans’ heads.

I mean, his priorities are all wrong here. He should be talking about what we’re going to do to overcome this pandemic. What are we going to do to push Russia back? And, instead, he had no time for that. He spent all his time talking about dead traitors.

BASH: So, that might be — be true, but George Washington, I don’t think anybody would call him a traitor. And there are…

DUCKWORTH: No.

BASH: … moves by some to remove statues of him. Is that a good idea?

DUCKWORTH: I think we should listen to everybody. I think we should listen to the argument there.

But remember that the president at Mount Rushmore was standing on ground that was stolen from Native Americans who had actually been given that land during a treaty.

And, again, let’s talk about the greater context of where we are in our country right now. We should be talking about the fact that COVID- 19 is experiencing a resurgence, and both this president and the man he put in charge of the pandemic response team, the vice president, have both failed miserably at their jobs.

I’m more worried about the 130,000 who have lost their lives recently and the thousands and thousands more Americans who are currently sick than I am about the — our historical past.

We need to talk about what we’re doing now to bring this country off of the brink of chaos that it’s in.

BASH: So, I’m going to ask about that, for sure, in a minute.

I want to ask also about the fact that you announced that you would block Senate confirmations of over 1,000 military officers until the Defense Department confirms that Lieutenant Colonel Alexander Vindman, who is a key impeachment witness — he was — against President Trump, to make sure that he gets his promotion.

Have you heard from the Defense Department?

DUCKWORTH: I have not heard from the Defense Department.

Let me just make it clear. If Lieutenant Colonel Vindman is on that list, he made his way on it through his own job performance. And you can’t get on the promotion list unless you were recommended to be on it by your rater, your intermediate rater and your senior rater. So, three superior officers have to agree to put you on the promotion list.

And all I’m saying is, I will not support the promotion of anybody to the rank of colonel or general unless the Defense Department certify to me that, if he is on the list, they won’t take him off.

The reports that I heard was that he was on the list, but that the White House had directed the secretary of defense to take his name off, a list that he earned his way onto himself.

And I’m not blocking the promotions of anybody below the rank of lieutenant colonel, so just colonels and generals.

BASH: So, let’s talk about the coronavirus and the way that leaders are or are not responding.

We spoke around Mother’s Day about the difficulties of being a mother while also working from home. And there was a recent “New York Times” op-ed entitled “The COVID-19 Economy: You Can Have a Kid or a Job. You Can’t Have Both.”

And the author wrote the following, wrote: “Why isn’t anyone talking about this? We — why are we not hearing a primal scream so deafening that no plodding policy can be implemented without addressing the people buried by it?”

You’re the first senator to give birth in office. You have two small children. How are you and other leaders dealing with this? And are you doing enough to address this problem?

DUCKWORTH: Well, child care is part of the Democrats’ proposal for the next COVID-19 relief bill. So, it is part of what our platform is.

And I will tell you, I’m living this on a firsthand basis. I just found out from my daughter’s public school that we have a choice come fall of her either being full-time homeschooling. And how do I do that and be a full-time united state senator?

And the other choice is that two days a week in school and three days a week at home. I can figure out how to make things work. But what about the single mom who’s got to go and work at McDonald’s or the grocery store? How are they going to put this together?

This is very much something that I’m talking with the Democratic leadership on. And it is part of the Democratic position that we should have child care for all Americans. BASH: Senator, hundreds of female black leaders across the country signed a letter urging Joe Biden to pick a black woman as his running mate.

And here’s what they wrote. They wrote — quote — “It is a fact that the road to the White House is powered by black women, and black women are the key to a Democratic victory in 2020.”

So, what do you think? Should he pick a black woman as his running mate?

DUCKWORTH: Well, I do think black women are a key to the victory for Democrats. Look at how Doug Jones was elected and will be reelected to the United States Senate.

Listen, the Biden campaign have their own process that they’re going through. And I’m sure Vice President Biden will pick the right person to be next to him as he digs this country out of the mess that Donald Trump has put us in.

Remember that we need a leader who’s going to bind us back together, someone whose resilience — who has empathy, who has seen so many of the ups and downs through his own life and can connect with the American people.

And Joe Biden is that person. And I believe so strongly that we need to get him into the White House.

BASH: So…

DUCKWORTH: I will do whatever I need to do. I will do whatever I need to do to support him.

And it’s one team, one fight. And I — if that means I have to go sweep floors in a VA hospital, and that’s the best thing I can do to help him win, then that’s what I will do.

BASH: So, real quick, you do not think that his running mate has to be an African-American woman?

DUCKWORTH: I think that Joe Biden needs to make his own mind and will make his own mind.

I don’t think it’s on any of us to dictate to him. He knows best who he needs as a vice president who can help him connect with the American people, who can help him overcome the crises that we’re — that we’re operating under right now, everything from rebounding from the COVID-19 pandemic, making sure we can face off the next pandemic, making sure our economy gets turned around, and making sure we push back our folks like the Russians, who are putting bounties on Americans’ heads.

BASH: Senator…

DUCKWORTH: There’s a lot of problems that Donald Trump is leading and Joe Biden is going to have to clean up.

And he will pick the right person to help him do that.

BASH: Senator, thank you so much.

Thank you for your service. We really appreciate it, again, especially on this holiday weekend.

DUCKWORTH: Thank you.

BASH: Thank you, Senator.

CBS News faced intense backlash this week over a deceptive headline the network published about a story in which a store owner defended himself using a firearm against violent looters.

CBS News reporter Sophie Lewis published a report that featured a title that stated: “A white bar owner in Omaha shot and killed a black protester. He won’t face charges.” CBS used the same line to promote the piece on Twitter.

A “black activist was shot and killed by a white bar owner after a fight broke out,” Lewis reported, before later noting that the “white bar owner” was actually first attacked by the “black activist.”

“A grainy surveillance video of the shooting, played during the briefing, shows that [bar owner Jacob] Gardner backed up and pointed a gun after two people tackled him in the street. He initially fired two shots into the air that did not hit anyone,” Lewis reported. “After [black activist James] Scurlock jumped on his back, Gardner can be heard saying ‘get off me’ many times before fatally shooting Scurlock once in the clavicle, Kleine said. Scurlock was taken to a local hospital where he died from his injuries.”

CBS News was widely slammed on social for their headline which gave a false impression of what actually happened.

Sidney Powell, the lawyer for General Michael Flynn, responded by writing on Twitter: “That was not a ‘protestor’– it was a violent attacker. The color of either is irrelevant. More die every weekend in #Chicago. It’s stupid & needless. Wake up America. Send in @USArmy to keep peace. @realDonaldTrump Protect the innocent. Stop the rape of America & murder of all.”

Political commentator and comedian Steven Crowder wrote: “Wonder why CBS didn’t include in the headline that the bar owner was being mercilessly gang-beaten and he acted in self defense?”

A popular conservative Twitter account opined: “Disturbing and indefensible headline clearly meant to provoke underserved outrage & division. I saw a lot of tweets about this yesterday but decided to wait until I saw more. Video and described witness testimony make it apparent that this tragic shooting was in self-defense. Clear from the video that Scurlock was the aggressor. 3 people, including Scurlock, jumped the bar owner even knowing he was armed. He had every reason to fear for his life. There were rumors being spread about a racial epithet, but audio and witnesses do not support that.”

RealClearPolitics writer Mark Hemingway wrote: “This is needlessly inflammatory and straight-up media malpractice.”

One Twitter user commented: “Beware of the media. Race baiting to spark up more tension is their sick objective. The man shot at them for breaking into his property. It was self defense. This why the president calls them fake news! CBS should be disgusted with themselves.”

Another Twitter user added: “Just CBS trying to stir up racial discord.”

A video clip from March 22, 2017, recirculated on social media early this week shows Obama national security adviser Susan Rice denying in an interview that she knew anything about the Obama administration’s unmasking of any Trump associates, which would include then-incoming national security adviser Michael Flynn.

“So, we invited you on to talk about several things but in the last few hours we’ve been following the disclosure by the Chairman of the House Intelligence Committee, Devin Nunes, that in essence during the final days of the Obama administration, during the transition after President Trump had been elected that he and the people around him may have been caught up in surveillance of foreign individuals and that their identities may have been disclosed,” PBS News Hour host Judy Woodruff said. “Do you know anything about this?”

Rice responded, “I know nothing about this.”

Rice’s 2017 claim has come under renewed scrutiny in light of newly declassified documents that were made public on Tuesday that show, by her account, that she was present for an Oval Office meeting with former President Barack Obama and other top Obama administration officials where they discussed Flynn’s phone calls with Russian Ambassador Sergey Kislyak.

Rice has come under fire repeatedly for her long “record of deceit.

TRANSCRIPT:

HOST JUDY WOODRUFF: Susan Rice, welcome to the program.

FORMER NATIONAL SECURITY ADVISER SUSAN RICE: Good to be with you, Judy.

WOODRUFF: So, we invited you on to talk about several things but in the last few hours we’ve been following the disclosure by the Chairman of the House Intelligence Committee, Devin Nunes, that in essence during the final days of the Obama administration, during the transition after President Trump had been elected that he and the people around him may have been caught up in surveillance of foreign individuals and that their identities may have been disclosed. Do you know anything about this?

RICE: I know nothing about this. I was surprised to see reports from Chairman Nunes on that count today.

And let’s back up and recall where we have been. The president of the United States accused his predecessor, President Obama, of wiretapping Trump Tower during the campaign. Nothing of the sort occurred, and we have heard that confirmed by the director of the FBI, who also pointed out that no president, no White House can order the surveillance of another American citizen.

That can only come from the Justice Department, with the approval of a FISA court. So, today, I really don’t know to what Chairman Nunes was referring, but he said that whatever he was referring to was a legal, lawful surveillance, and that it was potentially incidental collection on American citizens.

JUDY WOODRUFF: Right.

SUSAN RICE: And I think it’s important for people to understand what incidental means. That means that the target was either a foreign entity or somebody under criminal investigation, and that the Americans who were talking to those targets may have been picked up.

Attorney General William Barr’s office slammed far-left NBC News host Chuck Todd on Sunday for “deceptive editing” after Todd took remarks that Barr made out of context and used the distorted remarks to smear the Department of Justice (DOJ).

On “Meet The Press,” Todd used a deceptively edited portion of Barr’s interview last week with CBS News investigative reporter Catherine Herridge.

Todd focused in on the following exchange between Barr and Herridge:

HERRIDGE: In closing, this was a big decision in the Flynn case, to say the least. When history looks back on this decision, how do you think it will be written? What will it say about your decision making?

BARR: Well, history is written by the winner. So it largely depends on who’s writing the history. But I think a fair history would say that it was a good decision because it upheld the rule of law. It helped, it upheld the standards of the Department of Justice, and it undid what was an injustice.

Todd only played the first two sentences of Barr’s comments where Barr said, “Well, history is written by the winner. So it largely depends on who’s writing the history.”

Todd then launched into an attack on Barr, saying, “I was struck … by the cynicism of the answer. It’s a correct answer. But he’s the attorney general. He didn’t make the case that he was upholding the rule of law. He was almost admitting that, yeah, this is a political job.”

Todd’s comments were false because the very next thing that Barr said, which Todd did not show his viewers, was: “But I think a fair history would say that it was a good decision because it upheld the rule of law. It helped, it upheld the standards of the Department of Justice, and it undid what was an injustice.”

WATCH:

Barr spokeswoman Kerri Kupec responded to the segment by posting screenshots on Twitter of the transcript from what Todd said and what Barr said in his CBS News interview last week, writing: “Very disappointed by the deceptive editing/commentary by @ChuckTodd on @MeetThePress on AG Barr’s CBS interview. Compare the two transcripts below. Not only did the AG make the case in the VERY answer Chuck says he didn’t, he also did so multiple times throughout the interview.”

Herridge posted a video of her interview with Barr that showed the full context of Barr’s answer and also included the following additional exchange:

HERRIDGE: When the special counsel report was released last year, you were accused by critics of putting your thumb on the scale in the president’s favor. Are you doing the president’s bidding in General Flynn’s case?

BARR: No, I’m doing the law’s bidding. I’m doing my duty under the law, as I see it.

President Donald Trump played a video during the White House Coronavirus Press Briefing on Monday that showed the media’s initial response to the coronavirus outbreak and highlighted his response to the outbreak and showed Democratic governors around the country praising the Trump administration for the work they did.

The video started out by showing someone on “Good Morning America” saying, “People should be more concerned right now with the flu in this country.”

“A lot of people are concerned about the coronavirus because they’re hearing a lot of news about it right now but the reality is comparing it to the flu for example, it’s not even close to being at that stage,” someone on NBC News said.

“Coronavirus is not going to cause a major issue in the United States,” someone on CBS News said.

The video then cut to a highlight reel that showcased the Trump administration’s response to the coronavirus outbreak.

WATCH:

The video also showcased how the media even acknowledged that Trump was criticized for taking early action.

“As there were more cases, and it was clear that it was spreading out of China, where it originated the president took this move that he was widely criticized for, by Democrats and even some Republicans at the time, which was he halted a number of flights from China into the U.S.,” New York Times reporter Maggie Haberman said in an audio clip featured in the video. “The idea was to halt the spread of the disease. Keep transmissions to a minimum. He was accused of xenophobia. He was accused of making a racist move. At the end of the day, it was probably effective, because did actually take a pretty aggressive measure against the spread of the virus.”

The video highlighted the following comments from governors across the country. Here are a few of the examples included in the video:

  • New York Governor Andrew Cuomo (D): “His team is on it. They’ve been responsive late at night, early in the morning and they’ve thus far been doing everything they can do and I want to say thank you and I want to say that I appreciate it.
  • California Governor Gavin Newsom (D): “He returns calls. He reaches out, he’s been proactive. We could that Mercy ship down here in Los Angeles, that was directly because he sent it down here. 2,000 medical units came to the state of California, these FMS, these field medical stations, and that’s been very, very helpful.
  • Florida Governor Ron DeSantis (R): “The president has been outstanding through all this, the vice president has been outstanding, members of the Coronavirus Task Force, very responsive.”
  • New Jersey Governor Phil Murphy (D): “We had asked if we could have, if New Jersey could access to a piece of the beds that are on the USNS Comfort and the president came back, called me, assured me a few minutes before I walked in here to say that they would grant that to New Jersey. So that’s big step for us in addition to all the other capacity. I thank the president and vice president who were on the call.”

CNN cut away from the press conference shortly after the video started playing and MSNBC followed suit several moments later.

Dr. Anthony Fauci, director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, told CBS News on Sunday that American companies have been coming forward to produce the medical supplies needed to combat the coronavirus without the government needing to force them to do so.

“You mentioned in particular New York and what may be coming there,” CBS News’ Margaret Brennan said. “The president has tweeted this morning that Ford, GM, and Tesla have been given the go ahead to make ventilators. There’s been this back and forth over whether the president actually has ordered companies or not to produce needed medical equipment. What have these companies agreed to do, and when will medical professionals have what they need?”

“Well, I mean, as yesterday in the press conference that I’m sure you heard, what the president was saying is that these companies are coming forth on their own,” Fauci said. “And I think that’s an extraordinary spirit of the American spirit of not needing to be coaxed. They’re stepping forward.”

“They’re making not only masks, but PPEs, and now ventilators,” Fauci continued. “So what we’re going to be seeing, and we’re seeing it already, in the beginning, obviously, there was an issue with testing. The testing now – a large number of tests are available now, out there because the private companies have gotten involved.”

TRANSCRIPT:

MARGARET BRENNAN: Doctor Anthony Fauci is the director at the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases at NIH, and that is where he joins us from this morning. Dr. Fauci, thank you for making time for us.

DR. ANTHONY FAUCI: Good to be with you.

MARGARET BRENNAN: You just- you just heard that report from our Liz Palmer about Italy. Are we on the same trajectory as Italy?

DR. FAUCI: No, not necessarily at all. I mean, obviously, things are unpredictable. You can’t make any definitive statement. But if you look at the dynamics of the outbreak in Italy, we don’t know why they are suffering so terribly. But there is a possibility and many of us believe that early on they did not shut out as well the input of infections that originated in China and came to different parts of the world. One of the things that we did very early and very aggressively, the president, you know, had put the travel restriction coming from- from China to the United States and most recently from Europe to the United States, because Europe is really the new China. Again, I don’t know why this is happening there to such an extent, but it is conceivable that once you get so many of these spreads out, they spread exponentially and you can never keep up with this tsunami, and I think that’s what unfortunately our colleagues and our dear friends in Italy are facing. They are very competent. It isn’t that they don’t know what they’re doing.

MARGARET BRENNAN: Yeah.

DR. FAUCI: I think they have a situation in which they’ve been so overwhelmed from the beginning that they can’t play catch up. And in direct answer to your question, MARGARET, it is may be, and I hope and I think it will be the case, that we will not be that way because we have from the beginning been able to put a bit of a clamp on it. We’re going to get hit. There’s no doubt about it. We see it in New York. New York is ter- is terribly suffering. But the kinds of mitigation issues that are going on right now, the things that we’re seeing in this country, this physical separation, at the same time as we’re preventing an influx of cases coming in, I think that’s gonna go a long way to preventing us from becoming in Italy.

MARGARET BRENNAN: This was an animal virus that jumped to a human.

DR. FAUCI: Correct.

MARGARET BRENNAN: Then it started spreading human to human. Is the virus mutating? Is it changing?

DR. FAUCI: Well, this is an RNA virus, Margaret. And it always will mutate. The real question is so that people don’t get confused. Viruses commute- mutate with no substantial impact on its function. So I have no doubt it’s mutating as all RNA viruses mutate. We have not seen thus far any type of change in the way it’s acting, but we are keeping a very close eye on it because it is conceivable that it could mutate and change some of the ways that it performs. But we have not seen that yet, but we’re not going to just not pay attention to it. We’re going to follow it closely.

MARGARET BRENNAN: That’s very important to highlight there. You know, one of the things that stood out this week in some of the briefings we heard from the White House, was this mentioned, particularly from your colleague, Ambassador Birx, that young people in Europe seemed to be affected in a way that was unexpected.

DR. FAUCI: Right.

MARGARET BRENNAN: And we heard from the CDC this week, 20 percent of the hospitalizations in this country were between the ages of 20 and 44. Why–

DR. FAUCI: You’re absolutely–

MARGARET BRENNAN: –are young people getting affected this way when it wasn’t expected?

DR. FAUCI: You’re absolutely correct. And you just nailed the very important critical issue that we’re looking very closely at. You know, it looks like there’s a big difference between that demography, as we call it, from China and what we’re seeing in Europe. Now, we have to look at the young people who are getting seriously ill from the European cohort and make sure it isn’t just driven by the fact that they have underlying conditions because we know that underlying conditions, all bets are off. No matter how young you are, if you have an underlying serious medical condition, you’re going to potentially get into trouble. But if they don’t have underlying conditions, that will be something we have to really examine as to why we’re seeing it here, but we didn’t see it in China. So we’re going to look at that very closely.

MARGARET BRENNAN: You mentioned in particular New York and what may be coming there. The president has tweeted this morning that Ford, GM and Tesla have been given the go ahead to make ventilators. There’s been this back and forth over whether the president actually has ordered companies or not to produce needed medical equipment. What have these companies agreed to do and when will medical professionals have what they need?

DR. FAUCI: Well, I mean, as yesterday in the press conference that- that I’m sure you heard, what the president was saying is that these companies are coming forth on their own. And I think that’s an extraordinary spirit of the American spirit of not needing to be coaxed. They’re stepping forward. They’re making not only masks, but PPEs and now ventilators. So what we’re going to be seeing, and- and we’re seeing it already, in the beginning, obviously, there was an issue with testing. The testing now- a large number of tests are available now, out there because the private companies have gotten involved. The–

MARGARET BRENNAN: But like the mayor of New York has said this week that he was going to run out of medical equipment–

DR. FAUCI: Right.

MARGARET BRENNAN: –in a matter of two weeks.

DR. FAUCI: That’s true.

MARGARET BRENNAN: So when will medical- it is true he will run out?

DR. FAUCI: No, no.

MARGARET BRENNAN: Will the federal government get him what he needs?

DR. FAUCI: True, true to both of them. Let me explain.

MARGARET BRENNAN: OK.

DR. FAUCI: We were at- at the task force meeting yesterday, and it was very clear that the issue in New York was right on the front burner. And the situation is now that the resources that are being marshaled are going to be clearly directed to those hotspots that need it most. And clearly, that’s California, Washington state, and obviously, New York is the most hard hit. So not only is New York trying to get resources themselves, but we’re going to be pouring it in from the federal government. So it would be a combination of local and federal. But it’s very, very clear that they are a very high priority.

MARGARET BRENNAN: You are the leading infectious disease expert in the U.S. government. You said this week that you differed from the president in his assessment that a combination of two drugs, hydroxychloroquine and azithromycin combined could have the outcome that he described to the public. They possibly could. Where- who is the president listening to? And do you see a concern here that those drugs could become, you know, basically oversubscribed and there could be a shortage that could impact people who have persistent medical issues like lupus and need those?

DR. FAUCI: OK. So, MARGARET, there’s an issue here of where we’re coming from. The president, as heard, as we all have heard, what are what I call anecdotal reports that certain drugs work. So what he was trying to do and express was the hope that if they might work, let’s try and push their usage. I, on the other side, have said I’m not disagreeing with the fact anecdotally they might work but my job is to prove definitively from a scientific standpoint that they do work. So I was taking a purely medical, scientific standpoint and the president was trying to bring hope to the people. I think there’s this issue of trying to separate the two of us. There isn’t fundamentally a difference there. He’s coming from it from a hope layperson standpoint.

MARGARET BRENNAN: OK.

DR. FAUCI: I’m coming from it from a scientific standpoint.

MARGARET BRENNAN: And we wish you the best. Thank you very much, Doctor.

DR. FAUCI: Good to be with you.
