Connecticut GOP House Rep. Craig Fishbein was declared the loser in the race for his seat until a town clerk found an “error” had caused the race to be called for his Democrat opponent.

Wallingford town clerk Barbara Thompson said Tuesday her office discovered that votes had not been recorded in the state’s reporting system from Yalesville Elementary School, reported CT Mirror.

The school is one of nine polling places in the 90th House District that includes Wallingford and Cheshire.

“I can’t answer if it was a clerical error or a computer error in the elections management system,” Thompson said. “All I know is we caught it yesterday and amended it.”

As of Wednesday morning, unofficial results on the secretary of state’s elections website showed incumbent Fishbein ahead of challenger Jim Jinks, but, according to the Mirror, a recount will be conducted Thursday because of a margin of less than 0.50 percent.

“There’s no circumstance when an error like that is not caught and corrected,” Gabe Rosenberg, a spokesman for the secretary of the state, said.

The Mirror further reported:

Normally due within 48 hours after an election, the deadline for reporting final results was extended this year to 96 hours due to the expected heavy use of absentee ballots during the COVID-19 pandemic. The effective deadline was Monday, the first business day after the 96 hours.

Less clear was how the campaigns of Fishbein and Jinks were misled. The campaigns rely on results obtained at the polls, not the number posted on the state’s election site.

If Fishbein ultimately retains his seat, Democrats in the state will still maintain firm control of the legislative agenda in Connecticut, since they picked up seven House seats and two Senate seats, according to reported results.

During the pandemic, Gov. Ned Lamont (D) and his administration worked to waive regulations for the use of absentee ballots to ensure more voters could cast their ballots by mail.

The election in the state saw more than 650,000 people vote by “absentee ballot without an excuse.”

State House Speaker-designate Matt Ritter said he plans to focus in on suburban zoning reform, marijuana legalization, early voting, and a public health insurance option in the coming legislative session.

Amid President Donald Trump’s claims of voter fraud in some states due, in part, to mail-in ballots, Connecticut’s U.S. Sens. Richard Blumenthal and Chris Murphy joined with Secretary of State Denise Merrill Friday to urge the state legislature to pass an amendment to the Constitution to allow regular vote-by-mail and early voting.

Currently, Connecticut’s constitution does not allow early voting or mail-in voting. This year, during the Chinese coronavirus pandemic, Lamont said in April that, due to his “stay-at-home rule,” he was “going to have to find a way people can vote — and especially seniors — so they don’t have to leave their houses and go vote.”

“So, obviously the voting by mail makes a lot of sense to me,” Lamont said. “Now, I need the lawyers to figure out how to draft that.”

With the pandemic as background, Merrill sent every voter in the state, unsolicited, an application for an absentee ballot. The state Constitution, however, would need to be amended to allow mail-in and early voting for any reason at all.

“Connecticut is in the Neanderthal era,” Blumenthal said, just as mail-in ballots are a focus of intense controversy in the presidential election.

Following two terms of the presidency of Barack Obama, who is remembered as celebrating abortion giant Planned Parenthood with the words, “God bless you,” President Donald Trump and Vice President Mike Pence immediately went to work to fulfill the president’s promises to Americans who stand to protect the lives of the unborn.

Marjorie Dannenfelser, president of the Susan B. Anthony List (SBA List), who serves as national co-chair with Christina Bennett, of Pro-Life Voices for Trump, praised Trump’s leadership, and referred to his accomplishments as “groundbreaking.”

Below is a summary of 12 of Trump’s most significant achievements to officially turn the United States into a nation that values the sanctity of all human life, born and unborn.

Ended funding of groups that perform and promote abortion overseas

Days after his inauguration, Trump reinstated the “Mexico City Policy,” one that prohibits any non-governmental organizations (NGOs) that receive U.S. aid from performing and promoting abortion overseas.

Beyond reinstating that policy, Trump expanded it to the new Protecting Life in Global Health Assistance program by directing the Secretary of State to ensure the ban on taxpayer funds for overseas abortions is in place across most U.S. global health programs that provide assistance.

Appointed pro-life judges

In the final presidential debate of 2016, Trump stated, “I am pro-life, and I will be appointing pro-life judges.”

During his first term, Trump nominated three judges to the U.S. Supreme Court. Justice Neil Gorsuch was successfully confirmed in April 2017, and Justice Brett Kavanaugh in October 2018. The Senate will vote Monday, October 26, to confirm the president’s third nominee, Judge Amy Coney Barrett.

The Heritage Foundation reported that, as of October 21, Trump’s federal judiciary confirmations number 218.

As Breitbart News reported Tuesday, by the end of his first term, Trump will have confirmed more judges to the federal judiciary in one term than any recent U.S. president.

Signed a resolution that allows states to end Planned Parenthood’s family planning funding

In April 2017, Trump signed a resolution overturning an Obama rule forcing states to grant Title X family planning funds to Planned Parenthood. Though Planned Parenthood and its allies have challenged this policy, Trump’s move marked a stark contrast to the Obama-era policies that overwhelmingly supported abortion on demand and referred to it as “women’s health care.”

Defunded the pro-abortion United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA)

Trump’s State Department has ended U.S. funding of UNFPA – an agency that human rights activists have linked to the support of population control programs such as China’s coercive abortion “one-child policy.”

Required health insurance companies to reveal plans that cover abortion.

The Trump Department of Health & Human Services (HHS) issued a rule in 2018 that required health insurers to specify whether its plans cover abortion. Affordable Care Act plans that provide coverage for elective abortions are required to collect a separate payment from enrollees for that coverage, as the Obamacare law required as well. The Obama administration, however, failed to enforce the law, permitting collection of abortion coverage premiums along with regular insurance premiums.

“Thanks to this trickery, millions of Americans have unwittingly purchased plans without knowing about the hidden abortion surcharge,” said Dannenfelser at the time the rule was finalized. “Consumers deserve to know how Obamacare pays for abortion so they can avoid having their hard-earned dollars used to fund the destruction of innocent lives.”

New rules regarding HHS contraceptive mandate

The Trump departments of HHS, Treasury, and Labor issued two interim final rules that provided protection from the HHS contraceptive mandate for both religious objectors, such as the Little Sisters of the Poor, and moral objectors, such as pro-life organizations. The new rule also exempted private employers and educational institutions that have sincerely held religious beliefs or moral objections against providing contraceptives or abortifacient drugs.

New Office for Conscience Protection at HHS

In January 2018, the Trump HHS established the Conscience and Religious Freedom division of the Office for Civil Rights, which works to protect health care providers who do not wish to participate in abortions from discrimination.

Established that abortion is not family planning

In February 2019, the Trump HHS released a rule that would block about $60 million in family planning funding to Planned Parenthood and other abortion providers who refer girls and women for abortions.

The regulation, which governs Title X, the federal grant program that provides funding for family planning services, prohibited the use of the funds to “perform, promote, refer for, or support abortion as a method of family planning.”

The rule reinstated President Ronald Reagan’s “Protect Life Rule,” which barred the “co-location” of federally funded family planning clinics with abortion clinics.

Ending taxpayer-funded research using bodies of aborted babies

In June 2019, the Trump HHS announced it would no longer provide taxpayer funding for research in its programs that use human fetal tissue derived from the body parts of aborted babies.

In addition to ending research using fetal tissue from elective abortions at the National Institutes of Health (NIH), HHS also said the agency will be applying a rigorous review protocol as it considers funding for research outside of its department.

Clarified abortion is not a civil right

In June, the Trump administration finalized a rule that reversed the Obama administration’s definition of sex discrimination by eliminating both “gender identity” and “termination of pregnancy,” or abortion.

The rule protects health care entities that receive federal funding from being required to participate in, or pay for, abortions.

Became the first president to appear in person to address the March for Life

In January, Trump became the first U.S. president to speak at the March for Life in Washington, DC, the largest pro-life event in the nation.

Signed executive order protecting infants born alive

In September, Trump announced during the National Catholic Prayer Breakfast he would sign an executive order ensuring all babies born alive, whether prematurely or surviving abortion, receive the medical care they need.

The president stated:

Today I am announcing that I will be signing the Born-Alive executive order to ensure that all precious babies born alive, no matter their circumstances, receive the medical care that they deserve. This is our sacrosanct moral duty.

We are also increasing federal funding for the neonatal research to ensure that every child has the very best chance to thrive and to grow.

“I will always protect the vital role of religion and prayer in American society,” Trump said during his remarks at the prayer breakfast. “And I will always defend the sacred right to life.”

The SBA List continues to keep track of Trump’s pro-life wins. Meanwhile, the president pledged in early September that he will defund Planned Parenthood if elected to a second term.

Observing in a letter Joe Biden’s embrace of the Democrat Party’s extreme position of abortion on demand, at taxpayer expense, Trump wrote, if re-elected, he will also work to “continue the transformation of the federal judiciary,” and “finally pass and sign into law” pro-life legislation, including “the Pain-Capable Unborn Child Protection Act, the No Taxpayer Funding for Abortion Act, and the Born-Alive Abortion Survivors Protection Act.”

Dannenfelser said that, in just one term, Trump has become “the most pro-life president our nation has ever seen.”

“In 2016 then-candidate Donald Trump’s groundbreaking written commitments were instrumental to mobilizing pro-life voters to propel him to victory,” she said, adding, however, that “there is more work to be done.”

The pro-life leader said Trump’s letter offering his commitments for a second term is “further proof of pro-life momentum heading into this pivotal election.”

“Joe Biden and Kamala Harris’s support for abortion on-demand, paid for by taxpayers is extreme, immoral, and will prove to be a loser at the ballot box,” Dannenfelser asserted.

CLAIM: Leftwing media are claiming the medications President Donald Trump was given to treat his coronavirus infection were developed using fetal tissue from aborted babies.

VERDICT: False. None of the medications Trump was given involved the destruction of human life.

The New York Times published a piece Wednesday with the headline, “The treatment that Trump touted as a ‘cure’ for Covid-19 was developed using cells derived from fetal tissue.”

Portraying Trump as a hypocrite, the Times wrote the “antibody cocktail” the president “touted on Wednesday afternoon was developed with cells originally derived from fetal tissue, a practice that his administration has moved to restrict.”

Leftwing abortion rights advocates have long continued the narrative that aborted fetal tissue is needed to help create life-saving drugs.

The Times continued:

Mr. Trump last week received Regeneron’s cocktail of monoclonal antibodies — essentially, antibodies synthesized in living cells and administered to help the body fight off the infection.

To develop the antibodies, Regeneron relied on 293T, a cell line derived from the kidney tissue of an aborted fetus in the 1970s. At least two companies racing to produce vaccines against the coronavirus, Moderna and AstraZeneca, also are using the cell line.

Remdesivir, an antiviral drug Mr. Trump received, also was tested using these cells.

“293Ts were used in testing the antibodies’ ability to neutralize the virus,” said Alexandra Bowie, a spokeswoman for Regeneron. “They weren’t used in any other way, and fetal tissue was not used in the research.”

A piece at The Cut published Thursday echoed the claims made at the Times and also insinuated Trump may not have actually had the infection caused by the coronavirus.

The Cut’s claim:

In a rambling five-minute video posted to Twitter on Wednesday, a conspicuously bronzed Trump said his COVID infection was a “gift from God” because it introduced him to the drug Regeneron. It sure sounds like no one told him that this particular treatment is developed using fetal tissue, a crucial research avenue Trump’s administration has harshly condemned, and tried to restrict as part of its war on abortion rights.

Nevertheless, a statement from David Prentice, Ph.D., and Tara Sander Lee, Ph.D., of the Charlotte Lozier Institute (CLI), the research arm of the pro-life Susan B. Anthony List, addresses what they refer to as “uninformed commentary … stating that President Trump has received a medication created with the use of human embryonic stem cells.”

The CLI scholars state:

CLI has reviewed the published information and our conclusion is straightforward: The president was not given any medicines to treat COVID-19 that involved the destruction of human life. No human embryonic stem cells or human fetal tissue were used to produce the treatments President Trump received–period.

Prentice and Sander Lee present “the facts”:

The Regeneron therapy given to the president was made in Velocimmune humanized mice, a novel platform that uses genetically modified mouse embryonic stem (ES) cells to generate antibodies described here and here. Development of Regeneron’s antibody cocktail is detailed in the journal Science, describing how they identified their antibodies made from Velocimmune mice and blood from recovered patients previously infected with SARS-CoV-2. The final antibody pair used in the REGN-COV2 therapy cocktail was then produced in Chinese hamster ovary (CHO) cells. Results from Regeneron’s REGN-COV2 clinical trials to treat COVID-19 patients are reported here.

The CLI scholars say embryonic stem cells from mice have been key in the development of alternatives to fetal tissue:

Mouse embryonic stem cells and genetic modifications to make such mice date back to 1981, have been extensively studied, and were instrumental in the discovery of induced pluripotent stem (iPS) cells, another fully ethical alternative to fetal material, as discussed in this Nature review. iPSCs are much easier to use than human embryonic stem cells, more flexible in their uses, and are not ethically controversial. No one has ever advocated against using mouse embryonic stem cells for development of therapies – only against destruction of human lives.

“And finally, the anti-viral medicine remdesivir and the anti-inflammatory corticosteroid dexamethasone, also given to the president to treat COVID-19, are chemicals—no cells of any kind were used to produce these medicines,” CLI states.

“These facts reinforce this truth: ethical treatments are saving lives every day–including the president of the United States,” the CLI officials observe.

CLI also urged social media networks not to remove the erroneous information from their platforms but, instead, provide a link to CLI’s full statement making the corrections.

In June 2019, the Trump administration announced it would no longer provide taxpayer funding for research in its programs that uses human fetal tissue derived from the body parts of aborted babies.

In addition to ending research at National Institutes of Health (NIH) with fetal tissue from elective abortions, HHS said the agency will also be applying a rigorous review protocol as it considers funding for research outside of its department.

Pro-life leaders in many fields have studied the issue and agree fetal tissue is not necessary to develop clinical treatments and, in fact, has not contributed to the cure of any disease.

CLI’s Prentice said at the time the Trump administration’s announcement showed NIH is invested in research methods that have already been proven:

Adult stem cells, iPS cells, organoids, humanized mice constructed using postnatally sourced cells and improved non-human cell lines—just to name a few. All of these have been used in the production of treatments, vaccines and medicines currently on the market; the key is that our government will now invest in effective research methods that do not rely on the destruction of human life.

Dr. Donna Harrison, executive director of the American Association of Pro-Life Ob-Gyns, also applauded ending taxpayer funds to the abortion industry.

“The protection and care of human life by physicians and researchers must exist at all stages of life from conception to natural death,” she said, adding the Trump administration’s decision “is another clear example of the administration’s consistent protection of human life, regardless of location or age.”

“The Trump Administration has taken this important step toward stopping the barbaric practice of using the body parts of aborted babies for research,” Rep. Chris Smith (R-NJ) said. “Not only is the practice unethical, it is ineffective: fetal tissue, including fetal organs like liver and thymus, have not produced a single clinical treatment.”

Similarly, pro-life leader Kristan Hawkins, president of Students for Life of America, said at the time the announcement was another demonstration of the Trump administration’s vision of “restoring a Culture of Life to our government.”

“We’ve known for quite a while that Planned Parenthood in particular had created a macabre subculture, trafficking in infant body parts,” she said. “Ending this practice is ethically, scientifically, and morally right, especially as we’ve learned that fetal remains are not needed for research.”

Sen. Marco Rubio (R-FL) is calling on Attorney General William Barr to “immediately review” Planned Parenthood affiliates’ acquisition of federal funds through the Payroll Protection Program (PPP).

As chairman of the Senate Committee on Small Business and Entrepreneurship, Rubio led 33 of his Senate colleagues and 94 members of the U.S. House in requesting the Small Business Administration (SBA) conduct a full investigation into how affiliates of the abortion provider applied for and actually received $80 million in coronavirus relief loans.

On Monday, SBA released PPP loan data on program recipients who received at least $150,000. As NBC News reported, according to SBA, at least 43 Planned Parenthood affiliates received funds that totaled between $65 million and $150 million.

In a letter to Barr Tuesday, Rubio wrote he is requesting the attorney general’s “immediate attention to the Planned Parenthood Federation of America’s facially unlawful participation” in the PPP.

Rubio explained only small businesses with 500 or fewer employees were eligible for funds through the program.

“Planned Parenthood’s aggregate employee size is about 16,000 employees nationwide,” the senator continued, adding that although Planned Parenthood’s affiliates are incorporated separately, the national organization refers to its affiliates as “local offices.”

“Planned Parenthood’s bylaws describe an affiliate structure in which its management can uniformly and unilaterally impose policies and practices on its affiliates,” Rubio observed.

He noted SBA wrote to the involved Planned Parenthood affiliates in May, requesting the return of the funds after determining they were ineligible under the affiliation and employee size rules. The senator further pointed out SBA informed Planned Parenthood it could be referred for “appropriate civil or criminal penalties.”

“This latest disclosure once again raises concerns that these affiliates are unlawfully participating in the program,” Rubio wrote after the SBA loan data were disclosed. “I urge you to immediately review these loans to ensure the law is being followed and enforced.”

Planned Parenthood applied for and received the federal loans despite touting its decision last year to opt out of the federal family planning grant program (Title X) after the Trump administration enforced a rule that makes a clear distinction between abortion and birth control.
