Amazon pulled the plug on their new headquarters in New York City, taking with them the billions of dollars that would have gone into the project — and their blaming political hostility from people like Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-N.Y.)

As IJR previously reported, Ocasio-Cortez was “outraged” when Amazon picked her district for its new headquarters. When rumors started to swirl that Amazon was reconsidering the move, she took to Twitter to celebrate.

Well, Ocasio-Cortez got her wish. On Thursday, Amazon announced that they were pulling the plug on their New York City location because of the pushback from New York politicians.

In a statement, Amazon said:

“After much thought and deliberation, we’ve decided not to move forward with our plans to build a headquarters for Amazon in Long Island City, Queens. For Amazon, the commitment to build a new headquarters requires positive, collaborative relationships with state and local elected officials who will be supportive over the long-term. While polls show that 70 percent of New Yorkers support our plans and investment, a number of state and local politicians have made it clear that they oppose our presence and will not work with us to build the type of relationships that are required to go forward with the project we and many others envisioned in Long Island City.”

So in other words, Ocasio-Cortez and politicians like state Sen. Mike Gianaris (D-N.Y.) forced Amazon to pull out of the deal and take with them the 25,000 jobs and $2.5 billion campus they planned to build in Long Island City.

Amazon thanked New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio and New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo for their efforts and said they would consider future deals with the city if the political climate allows, saying:

“Thank you again to Governor Cuomo, Mayor de Blasio, and the many other community leaders and residents who welcomed our plans and supported us along the way. We hope to have future chances to collaborate as we continue to build our presence in New York over time.

Many took to Twitter to mock New York City for letting the opportunity slip through their hands.

Amazon said they would not be picking another location to replace the New York City headquarters, instead, they will divide the resources between their new developments in Northern Virginia and Nashville, as well as their other locations nationwide.

UPDATE [2/14/2019, 2:20 p.m. ET]: Ocasio-Cortez tweeted a response to Amazon’s decision.

Anything is possible: today was the day a group of dedicated, everyday New Yorkers & their neighbors defeated Amazon’s corporate greed, its worker exploitation, and the power of the richest man in the world,” she wrote.
